Zameeni – A Signature of Indian weavers.
As the weaver’s radiant fingers play over the looms, a rare artistry unfolds like a symphony composed by a skilled musician and the fabric woven has its own exquisite harmony.
Warp by warp, weft by weft, a delightful range of colors are woven passionately by the weaver, guarding a legacy handed down the generations. The handloom fabrics have inspired our imagination for ages and have created an aura people have always dreamt about. While fashion is all about looking towards the future and having a global approach, it’s equally important to stay in touch with one’s roots
Despite sweeping changes, traditional weaving has stayed alive thanks to continuous efforts of artists, craftsmen and people like Manisha Jhamb, founder and promoter of Zameeni who have been helping artisans weave their dreams and visions into exquisite handloom products.
After completing her Masters in Business Administration with specialization in Human Resource from Lucknow University, she joined the corporate world. However, she felt disconnected and decided to do what she enjoys the most – travel and connect to the roots of India.
“I would always buy handloom products. Be it personal or for gifting purpose, the magical weaves created by Indian weavers always fascinated me. However, the lack of recognition irked me. That’s when ‘Zameeni’ was born on August 14, 2014,” said Manisha.
The word ‘Zameeni’ has origins from Urdu word ‘zameen’ or Mother Earth. A literal translation is ‘grassroots’, the basic and fundamental place of origin. The purpose of Zameeni is to ensure a fair trade with the weavers. The underlying objective is to promote integrity, transparency and sincerity in this industry. “We hope to bridge the gap between fading Indian arts and craftsmen with markets and appreciative consumers,” beamingly she said.
She attributes her nature of travel and quest to be enrooted to India culture to her parents who ensured to show her the real India.
